Adventure on the horizon

A few months back my girlfriend, Anna, and I were chatting about our goals and all the things we wanted to do both individually and together. The conversation started to move toward traveling and how much we both enjoy it and want to do more of it together. Then one of her bucket list items came up…backpacking through the Lost Coast.

My initial reaction…Were is that and will we be coming back? Sounds totally prehistoric to me! Initially the red flags were up.

I saw her face light up because she had a reason to show and tell and give me all the reasons she wanted to visit this place. She took me through numerous websites and hiking guides and I was sold on the idea. You can read about it here but it’s one of the last untouched areas of coastline in California. The experiences we’ve read about and the images we’ve seen are truly breathtaking.

This chat was late last year and we made a pact that this trip will happen in 2012 and that we’d pull it off together. Well, last week was a bit of a milestone toward our goal…we’ve set the date, made a list of ‘things’ we need and we’ve started a mild training program. Sticking to that program is another discussion and I’m hoping that putting this out there to the world will help us whip ourselves into shape so we can enjoy this experience to its fullest.

But to share a little detail about what we’re doing…the plan is to drive to the trail head which is 4hrs north of San Fransisco…then hike a day and a half north through the lost coast with only ourselves and what we can carry on our backs. Then we’ll hike a day and half back. So, that’s 3 days exploring, walking, climbing, swimming…whatever comes out way. Just saying this out loud makes it more of a reality!

We’ve been hitting the Yoga classes since the first of the year to strengthen our core and we’ve been running for 45minuites at a time to build some endurance. We’ve also started eating better…more organic ingredients and cooking at home as much as we can.

There’s a lot more we need to be doing but, hey…it’s a start!

From time to time I’ll be updating the blog on how we’re coming along and how we’re feeling about this whole adventure…in the meantime, here’s an image taken just after one of our training runs. On the beach of course…it’s a rough life, isn’t it!

Happy Valentine’s Day

I look at Valentine’s Day as a little reminder be thankful for all the wonderful people in my life. I’m given support, advise, and a shoulder to lean on. I’m given everything I need by those around me to be the best person I can be. But what makes me feel best is when I can give more than I receive.

Most of all I’m reminded that love is a lifestyle, not just one day of the year.

Enjoy the ones you love every day of the year.

Noreen & Eric – Engaged

I don’t think I have ever laughed as hard or as long during an engagement session. Then I laughed so much more as I was editing the images.

These two are hilarious together and most importantly make each other laugh to no end. They wanted their engagement session to reflect their relationship…how they are when they’re alone, how they are with friends and family…just like their wedding will be.

We spent the better part of a day together in LA…Angles Flight, Disney Concert Hall, LA Live and LACMA. Then, when I just thought we were through, they treated me to an amazing Umami Burger and great conversation.

Big huge thanks to Krystel for introducing us!

Noreen and Eric, getting to know you guys has been a highlight for me…I can’t wait for your wedding!

Saving Memories

If there was ever a good reason to keep every single image you’ve ever taken…here’s one.

My step-father sent me this image and while I vaguely remember having a deer in our lives, I never knew there was proof. Until now.

I guess the reason behind having the deer should be explained. The short story is that I grew up in a small town in Illinois and my mom and step-father worked for the county in the animal services department. A very humble beginning but this gave us quite a few unique experiences…and here’s one.

Along with this image were images of my Grandma, Grandpa, Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother…images of my mother just a few years after I was born and lots of other family members that have since passed or haven’t talked to in quite some time.

This is the back yard where I grew up chasing fireflies, climbing trees and apparently hanging out with deer. But it’s no longer there…at the time of this photograph, the house was close to 100 years old and unfortunately caught fire a few years ago and had to be torn down. All we have are our memories and these images to pass along to our family.

That’s my sister and I…hangin’ out.

These images brought back a flood of memories and feelings that I’m so thankful for. Today, taking and preserving our images is easier than it has ever been and it’s only getting easier. As a photographer, and a person who’s about to have another milestone birthday, staring at his 5yr old self next to a deer, I urge you to take a camera with you everywhere and document every moment you possibly can.

MaryAnne & Chris – Engaged

There are certain things about each couple that become apparent to me throughout an engagement session. As we hang out and get to know each other and chat between shots the chemistry comes through, the walls break down and comfort level rises. These two have a true affection for one another. There’s a soft playfulness between them. In the very beginning Chris danced and spun MaryAnne around and pulled her close. This first frame was one of the first I snagged from our time together. From the start…this was going to be a good session.

They’re getting married at the Escena Resort in Palm Springs later this year and I can’t wait for what’s in store. They say it’s going to be rowdy. I told them it better be.

Kristin and Dan – Married at The Crosby

Exciting News

Wow, the new year has been exciting so far and we’re only a week into it!

After photographing my final and largest wedding of the year in late December (nearly 300 guests!) we received word that our 7 month search for a studio finally came to fruition and we received the keys on January 2nd! We’re sooo excited and I can’t wait to share this process with you as well. As you can see below, it’s a blank slate and is located on the Bird Rock Strip in La Jolla. We feel extremely lucky to have gotten the space as we literally stumbled upon this while visiting a space for rent across the street.

Some things just happen for a reason.

Here’s a little glimpse at what will soon be our new meeting space. We’ll be having a house warming party so stay tuned.

In other news, I’ve teamed up with Sea Rocket Bistro in North Park to pull together a little party and I’d love for you to come. Sea Rocket is an amazing restaurant that also has a farm-to-table catering menu. Weddings, private parties…dinner…you name it!

I’ll have a few images on display and will be there to chat, eat good food, drink wine and meet new people. It’ll be a great night and below are the details…I would love to meet you and hope you can make it!
